Hong Kong Staycation: Discover Five Awesome “Out-of-Town” Moongazing Spots

Have you discovered “Moonwalking”?  No, not the dance moves by Michael Jackson, but the tradition of gazing at the moon for a glimpse of the Moon Goddess Chang E.

The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar in celebrating a full moon. This provides the perfect opportunity to responsibly gather, observing current restriction, with our friends and families and enjoy a heart-warming night while admiring the full moon and eating mooncakes. This year, however, to avoid crowded places for moongazing activities – we need to find new places to look at the moon.

Expedia has selected five special moongazing locations in Hong Kong for you to enjoy a wonderful night with your loved ones. These include the “hidden gem” – Cape D’Aguilar, two family-friendly venues – Tai Mei Tuk and Tai Au Mun, as well as two locations to potentially camp to enjoy the full moon – Grass Island and Lo Kei Wan.

Cape D’Aguilar

Cape D'Aguilar

Cape D’Aguilar, also known as Cape D’Aguilar Marine Reserve, is located on the southeasternmost tip of Hong Kong Island. It is not only a famous hiking destination, but also a great location for stargazing and moongazing, surrounded by the amazing natural scenery of Hong Kong. If you are heading to Cape D’Aguilar, remember to follow the hiking rules and to protect the environment. Also, remember to take all your trash away with you.

How to get there: Take bus 9 at Shau Kei Wan and jump off at Cape D’Aguilar Road, then walk along the road for around 45 minutes and you will reach Cape D’Aguilar.

Tai Mei Tuk

Tai Mei Tuk

Tai Mei Tuk, near Plover Cove Reservoir in Tai Po, is probably one of the best locations for moongazing. As well as being very spacious, it is perfect for cycling and barbequing, with plenty of room for kids to play around, it is also a hot pick for moongazing.

How to get there: Take bus 75K / 275R (holiday only) or minibus 20C and get off at the Tai Mei Tuk terminus.

Tai Au Mun

Tai Au Mun

Tai Au Mun is part of the Clear Water Bay Country Park and has a huge open grassland area. It is also one of the few designated areas for flying kites. During the daytime, you can fly kites, or hike to Tai Leng Tung via Lung Ha Wan Country Trail to enjoy the beautiful coastal views of Sai Kung. At night, you can sit back and have a picnic on the hillside while admiring the full moon.

How to get there: Take bus 91 from Diamond Hill and get off at Tai Au Mun or take minibus 16 / 103M at Tseung Kwan O or Po Lam and drop off at Tai Au Mun, then walk along Clear Water Bay Road for around 30 minutes and you will arrive at the Tai Hang Tun kite flying area.

Grass Island

Grass Island

If you’d like to experience real getaway – how about a night on a remote island? You could take a ferry to Grass Island, an outlying island that lies to the north of Sai Kung. It’s a chance to get away from urban life and get back to nature. As the name suggests, Grass Island has a large grassy area for you and your loved ones to camp and picnic. Besides enjoying precious time together under the stars, you can also enjoy the beautiful sunrise.

How to get there: Take a ferry from Wong Shek Pier or Ma Liu Shui Pier.

As Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day Holiday are on the same day, Hong Kong has four consecutive days off, which provide us more options for a longer trip to admire the night skies. You could also travel to Lo Kei Wan, located at the south of Lantau Island, for overnight camping. The view of Lo Kei Wan beach is astonishing, and is easily accessible. No matter whether you are moongazing on the night of Mid-Autumn Festival or any night over the long weekend, the scenery will not disappoint.

How to get there: Take bus 11 / 23 from Tung Chung, or catch a ferry from pier 6 in Central and then take bus 1 / 2 at the Mui Wo ferry terminal. Get off at Shui Hau Village, then walk along Lantau Trail Section 9 (towards Shek Pik) for around 25 minutes to reach the Lo Kei Wan campsite.
